WEEK 16 Jan 29th 2007

Broderick Miller

scan00026’ Point Guard

Brody was born and grew up here in Flint, MI.  He began hooping at a young age and won his first championship at Gundry Elementary when he was in the 6th grade (12&under).  Brody and his 7th grade team also won their age division(14&under)the following year.  He played high school ball at N-Dub and later transferred to buc-town.  Brody gained invaluable leadership qualities as he was captain of his his high school squad.  He went on to play ball at Knoxville College, in Tennessee.  His freshman year he was 1st team all-NAIA and then transferred to Wilber Forest University  for his sophomore year.   His work ethic and winning mentality make him a fierce competitor on the hoop court still to this day. At CM, Brody is an exemplary team player who keeps his teammates involved and thinks pass first, then shoot.  His first season at CM his team won the league championship (Summer 2006). In his second season, Brody is a top scoring and assist contributor on his team, which is currently 14-1.  He is a competitive player but he also manages to have fun and enjoy the game in which he is playing.  Brody hobbies include working out and lifting weights and his favorite food is steak with shrimp.  His favorite NBA team is the LA Lakers and Kobe and Ervin Johnson are his favorite players. His fav. All-time college player is Mr. Stephon Marbury who spent 1 year at Georgia Tech and then moved into the League (Minn. Timberwolves).  He says this about CM, “It is a real good program and it gives us all something to do.”  For being a good team player, having a good attitude and being a positive force in the program we would like to thank you and may God continue to bless you and yours.

WEEK 17 Feb, 5TH 2007

ROB THOMAS

6’2 Forward

IMG_3255          Rob grew up as a youth in Flint playing basketball whenever he got the opportunity.  Rob has developed into a man who is known for his kind personality and joyful spirit.  In CM, Rob always wears a smile and he always has an encouraging word for whoever wants to listen.  For instance, we always know when Jimmy’s team plays because Rob comes into the gym and shouts “What’s happenin!” or something to that effect. Another time, Rob came to CM with bags of food from where he works and said, “the volunteers have to eat too!”  Rob was unavailable to comment about the CM program but it is our understanding that Rob enjoys coming to Great Lakes Baptist Temple every week.  Just listing facts...free basketball league, trophies, a sports banquet, free t-shirts, and the best referee in the county who officiates and also dispels his knowledge to all CM participants.  What more could you ask for...  I would think if everyone in the league played the game of basketball with the exact attitude and mentality of Rob Thomas, CM would be the most competitive program with determined players that play with their heart on every rebound, steal, and possession.    Rob we thank you for your participation in CM and for setting a good example as to what a true athlete is.  The best of luck to you in your endeavors and may God continue to bless you and yours.

WEEWEEK 18 Feb. 12th 2007

BO WESTON

 5’11 Forward

2006 MVP, Captain

IMG_2661BO   Bo Weston was born and raised in Flint, MI. He began playing basketball at the age of 8, but his first love is the game of football.  He attended Daily and Holmes in grade school, played for the Little Raiders, and went to N-dub high school where he went on to earn several honors for varsity football play.   Bo played middle line-backer and full-back positions and was named All-City, All State, All-Valley 1st team for his defensive efforts on the field.  After high school, Bo pursued a Criminal Justice (C.J.) major at Mott.  C.J. is an ensuing interest that he is continuing to pursue. He also plays the 3-on-3 circuits as a member of the neighborhood superstars.  God has blessed Bo with 2 daughters Taijah 7 years and Myania 2 years. One of his goals is to have his own successful business to enable him to provide his children with opportunities in the future.  He is a committed father and works hard as a Productions associate Flint Mid State Blating .  Bo’s favorite meal is a double bacon cheese burger and steak fries at Red Robin- good thing his hobby is lifting weights.  His favorite coach is Lenny Wilkins and favorite team is the Dallas Mavericks, and favorite player is LeBron James. Bo has been involved with CM since the very first season at GLBT a few years back.  He has been captain the last two seasons and has lead his team to winning seasons each go around.  He has stepped up his play and number of shot attempts since his team acquisition and has proven to be the team leader.  Currently, he leads a very competitive team that plays hard and has a defense that poses a threat to any CM team’s offensive position.    Bo patented the term  “BO-HOP” in CM as he jump-hops in the post and before many of his shots but he is quite effective now that the rules have changed.  Bo says, “Me and Mike Bray are the best front/back court on the league.”  He doesn’t lack confidence as you can see but he was serious when he said, “CM is the best league I ever played in. Pastor inspires young men to come together and play as a team and he controls the game so we don’t have to worry about confrontations in the gym.”   CM is grateful for Bo’s participation in CM and his volunteer work he did with the youth league summer/fall of 2005.  Bo has always been helpful when there is work to be done and we thank you for your service to God and this ministry.

    W WEEK 19 Feb 19th 2007

Marcus Willis

2006 MVP,CAPTAIN

5’5’’ point guard

Marcus was born in Mississippi but moved to Flint as a youth.  He attended N-Dub high school and was a major player for the varsity squad his freshman through his senior year.  Marcus lead the team as a floor general who played every game to his full potential.  Marcus has truly been blessed in his personal life with a beautiful and caring girlfriend and two amazing children.  Kenyatta  Dugans and Marcus take pride in their home and their children Marcus Jr. (3 years) and Lamar (1 year) and they strive to provide a great future for them both.  Their lives are dedicated to working hard and being good parents and serving God with all their hearts.   In 2006, Marcus was the CM MVP earning the 7 foot trophy .  Marcus was  awarded with this honor after faithfully attending church on a regular basis at GLBT, leading his teammates, and being an exemplary player on and off the court.  Marcus has been an exciting player to watch as he stands a mere 5 and a half feet tall but plays like a giant. His love for the game of basketball also makes him a unique player– leaving every ounce of energy on the court by the end of regulation play.  As the captain of his team Marcus leads by example and gets all his players involved in the competition.  Marcus says, “I love playing at the church….it’s all about getting to hoop and hearing about God.”  When asking Marcus what his motto for life was he replied, “ I live by the code of God.”  What a blessing testimony that is to everyone who has an opportunity to read this article.  His goal in life is “to make it”– simply put.  Marcus is the scoring assist and scoring leader for his team which has had a winning season since they began playing in CM.  Team Marcus will continue to one of the “teams to beat” due to great leadership and passionate play.  CM would like to thank Marcus and his family for being a part of the CM family and entertaining us all on the court.  May God continue to shower blessings upon you and your family as you humbly serve our Savior Jesus Christ.

WEEK 20 Feb 26, 2007

Kevin Smith

2006 MVP

6’3’’ point guard

Kevin Smith was born and raised in Flint and moved to Davison during his high school years. At Davison High, Kevin was instrumental to the success if his team.  As a captain, he lead by example averaging over 20 ppg. and dishing out double digit assists.  In his senior year his team won the Big-9 championship and with confidence he says, “I am the only player to have won a league championship and lead the league in scoring.”  I would have to do my research to prove otherwise, but  his talent did follow him to Mott where he started as a freshman.  In the 1994-1995 season, Kevin lead the team to a State Championship and earned M.V.P. honors for state tourney play.  Kevin also attended Kalamazoo Valley and was 2nd in the nation in assists per game, averaged double-double (points & assists), and was team M.V.P.  Mr. Smith learned leadership characteristics at a young age and uses that and his self-assurance to be successful. He is able to be that leader on a daily basis but he has to work hard at it as his job is to make our city safe.  Kevin and his wife are Flint police Officers and, as with everything in their life, they are dedicated to what they do.  Officer Smith worked K-9 unit for many years with his dog “Nero” at his side.  It is assuring to know that Kevin has accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and to know that while he confronts criminals God watches over His son.  Amanda and Kevin were blessed last year with their first child Amaya Lynn who just started walking at 10 months.  God has blessed Kevin and his family for their faith in Him and there life’s service committed to helping others.  Kevin’s goal in life is to continue to be successful and care for his family.  His guidance for those who are in need of it is to “treat others as you would expect to be treated and to always think of the repercussions of your actions”. Every action begins with a CHOICE that has at least two outcomes or consequences.  Kevin would be put out of business is everyone in Flint would choose to make good decisions to live healthy lives.  Kevin said this about CM, “No matter where you came from or whatever you do, here at CM you’re all the same...everyone is equal.  Pastor keeps everything on a level playing field and controls the program effectively.”  We thank you for your participation in the CM program and may God continue to Bless you and your family.

WEEK 21 March 12th 2007

Damario Miles

scan00015’7’’ Point Guard

April 26, 1980  to February 18, 2007

Damario, also known as Mario, grew up here in Flint playing basketball all the way.  His love for the game grew as he played at Northern high school and continued playing in city leagues through his adult years.   Mario played in CM for the last two seasons and was instrumental to his teams success and the competitiveness of the CM program.  He was a leader by example on the court and a fierce competitor in every game.  He will be known for his floating runner in the lane which takes skill and can only be accomplished with a shooters touch.  Mario was also a player that demanded defense as he could drain open shots from just about anywhere on the court.  The last six games Mario played at CM he averaged 24 ppg. scoring over 30 in two of those competitions.  His participation in CM was a blessing to us and we thank God that he provided us with the time Mario was with us. We cannot predict what will occur in God’s kingdom calendar but those who have accepted Christ as their savior can find peace in knowing that one day we will see Mario, our friends and families one day soon.  Mario will forever be remembered for his tenacious play as a baller but more importantly his presence will be missed by all friends, his mother, his son, his many family members and many other acquaintances.   Mario enjoyed playing basketball and because of that love for the game he got the opportunity to hear about Jesus Christ at least once a week at Great Lakes Baptist Temple.  On Feb. 12th 2007, the last night he played at CM he accepted Christ as his personal savior.  Mario had a smile for just about everybody here in earth and imagine how big his smile must be right now as he walks the streets of gold in heaven… We will miss you Mario but we hope to see you soon.

God has a purpose for every life that exists.  Because we cannot know exactly how long our life will last, living a life that glorifies God is all we can do. In prayer, we can find hope, and faith in God will bring you peace in your life and the strength to overcome any obstacle.  Moses said to the people of Israel that they had a purpose to fulfill and this was how they were to be delivered by God, Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and of good courage, fear not nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”

WEEK 22 March 19th 2007

DVC00133_004Quinn Weston

6’ Guard

Quinn, being  born and raised in Flint, began playing ball at 8 years old with a milkcrate for a basket and a ball that was much smaller than a men’s ball.  He played and attended Longfellow in his youth and continued on to Northern for his high school years.  Quinn also pursued a communications degree at Mott and was invited to play on the 1999 men’s basketball team.  God has blessed Quinn throughout his life but none more than his two greatest successes– his daughters Katara 8, Quinise 4.  His favorite pro player is Chauncey Billups and but his nickname “Mhit’n” originates from Gary Payton being known as the “glove”. Quinn says his favorite college players are Kevin Tiggs and Greg Hamlin because “they were never given the opportunity to play, instead they went out and earned it”.  Quinn continues to have a love for the game of basketball and says that what motivates him is competition.  He and the Neighborhood Superstars frequent the 3-on-3 circuits in the summer and play in several leagues each year. He has consistently participated in CM since season ONE (Nov. 2003) and he could possibly hold the league record for the amount family members actively participating in the league at any one time (Bo, Trever, Mike, Stan, Ed, Quientin).  Quinn was awarded with the highest honor in CM as Pastor’s 7 ft. trophy MVP winner due to his good attitude, leadership, respect for program, and for volunteering.   His leadership qualities have assisted his team to the league finals 3 times, winning the championship  in the summer of 2006.   During these last few years at CM  Quinn was able to learn more about God and eventually began attending the GLBT Sunday school and volunteering as coach and referee during CM’s 12-under youth basketball league.  His quote about CM is, “ the program allows people to come have fun and play the sport they love AND hear about God.”  God has bless Quinn accordingly for the hard work he’s done and sacrifices he’s chosen to make and we pray God’s blessing continues to be upon your family as well as with you in your future endeavors.  We thank you for your participation and we look forward to the many seasons to come.

WEEK 23 March 26th 2007

James Fuller

5’2 Guard

Coach of the Year

FULLERJames, or ’Fuller’ was born in Mobile Alabama and moved to flint as a youth.  Two years after coming to Flint, he began playing ball at age 14.  Fuller attended Lowell middle school and Northwestern High.  He started playing in CM at age 17, and has been a part of the program ever since.  Fuller loves coming to the gym and he is there just about every night.  He assists Pastor by taking the stats or running the clock and is always looking for a good conversation.  Fuller says that he is a “loving guy, ya know, nice to everybody”, which he proves each time he come to CM.  Fuller is an infamous coach and compiles teams with talented rosters.  He says that currently, “the Hit Squad is the best team playing in the league.”  Fuller is a nice guy and can be controversial at times.  In all that, God has blessed James tremendously with two children which he takes pride in fathering, Tysonya 20, and James Fuller II 17.  His favorite food is chicken and rice and his all time favorite player/coach combo is M.J./Phil Jackson.  Fullers hobbies include basketball– watching, playing, and playing video games.  Knowing that, I assume he watches a lot of Detroit Basketball because his favorite player is Chauncey Billups and once again the Pistons are his team pick.  Fuller’s favorite CM moment among many was the last few slam dunk championships in which Kevin walked away with the trophy. Fuller is a great asset to the CM program due to his loyal participation and helpful nature, but overall he is a joy to be around keeping us all entertained.  His team’s are always competitive (winning league championship 2nd season) and that is likely due to his leadership on and off the court.  He takes pride in the competitions his teams play in and has a passion for winning.  About CM he says “I love it!  Pastor knows how to run it like no other league.”  For all the many years of hoop and laughs we thank you for being a part of the CM family.  May God continue to bless you & yours.

WEEK 24 April 2nd 2007

Kevin Tiggs

kingkevin6’4’’ Fwd

King Kevin was born and raised in Flint and attended Whittier Middle School and Northern High School.  Kevin began playing ball when he was 13 and what a story he could tell about the last 10 years.  Today, I learned that Kevin is the leading contender for National Player of the Year and his goal is to make it to The League (NBA).  Throughout his youth his skills developed at a rapid pace as he became a student of the game.  Kevin took the first step in moving his career forward in 2005 at Mott.  During his two years, Kevin scored 1,025 points and made a powerful impact on the Bears basketball program.  He averaged 18.8 ppg, 7.2 rpg., and 2.5 apg. for the 2006-2007 season.  Kevin is a leader by example and his teammates feed off his strong, athletic presence.  Just two weeks ago, Kevin and his team set the record at Mott for most wins (35-3) and won the National Championship.  Mott Coach says, “Kevin will be 1st-Team All American hands down, and he has best chance at being National Player of the Year.  He has been an absolute inspiration to coach...he gives his best effort all the time...he’s a genuine, real person and he is my all- time favorite player to have coached or been associated with.”  God has obviously blessed Kevin tremendously with athletic talent, but just as impressive is his character, fun spirit, and congenial personality. His constant smiling and laughing draws people to him– it reminds me of someone who Is full of the joy of the Lord.  One of his close friends says, “You can’t help but be attracted to his loyal and fun personality...When I first saw him I was like, man, this guy never stops smiling…” Some quick facts about Kevin:  favorite food– Mcdonalds, Fav. NBA player– Lebron James, Fav. Coach– Coach K. (Duke), Fav. College team– Florida, Fav. College player– Gred Oden (OSU), hobbies– playing basketball and video games.  His goals in life are to play professional basketball and to start his own business in the restaurant industry.  Kevin has played in CM for 4 seasons and about the program, he says, “I love coming down here and I have fun making Pastor Steven’s laugh.”  At CM, Kevin has been a consistent top  scorer for his team and helped his team win the summer 2006 league championship and received playoff MVP honors.   We would like to thank you, Kevin, for your participation in CM and we will continue to pray that God gives you wisdom in your choices and grace  and love in your future endeavors.

6’5’’ Fwd

Hank was born and raised in Flint MI and started playing ball when he was 5 years old.  He attended Beecher and Northern averaging 16 ppg and 9rpg just as a freshman and 22 ppg and 12 rpg as a sophomore.  Hank continued playing after high school at Rose State and averaged 15 ppg and 8 rpg in his first season. Hank is talented on both ends of the hoop court in the paint but he feels right at home offensively on the three point line and beyond as well.  He is a tough defender who can run the court well and dish a good pass or finish the play.   Something not everyone knows about Hank is that from 1998– 2002 he was a field radio operator for the U.S. Marines being stationed in California for 2 years and Japan for 1 year (8 countries in total).  He traveled extensively throughout those years and says it was an eye opening experience.   Hanks hobbies include playing ball, pool, working out, and bowling and his favorite food is hamburgers n french fries and Chinese food.   His favorite NBA player is currently Shaq and all time fav. is Jordan. His favorite team is Phoenix and his fav. college team is Florida– 2 time champs.  Hank future plans are to enroll at MMI (motorcycle mechanics institute) in Florida and open up his own shop within 5 years.  His long term goals include having a house and family upon being established.  Hank has played in CM since 2004 and won the league championship with Team Tommy in 2005.   He is a dominant player on his team and in the league and is one of the top scorers each week in CM.  About what he likes about CM he says, “the environment, the people, and its family oriented...I love it.”  He also says his best attribute athletically is his post game.  Hank has been a good team leader and a joy to have in the program and we thank you for your participation in CM.   We pray God will guide your paths, bring many successes in your future endeavors, and continue to bless you and yours.

 WEEK 27 April 23rd 2007

turkArnold Lakes

“Turk”

6’3’’ Swing Man

Turk was born and raised in Flint and started playing ball at 9 years old.  He attended McKinley Middle School and Central High and averaged 13 pts 4 rbs per game.  After high school Turk continued playing at Mott in 1998 and averaged 11 ppg and 5 rpg in his first year.  He then traveled south to pursue his athletic career at Texas Lutheran University.  God has allowed this young man to accomplish much at a young age but God also blessed him with  personal treasures– Eli 8, Ezra 5, Ray 6, Ali 4, and Eva 3.  Turk has been married to his lovely bride Amber for 13 years and he says that what he enjoys most is spending time with his family and enjoying his kids.  His goal is to receive his L.P.N. or RN license and later become a family pediatrician.  Turks favorite food is chicken-n-dumplings, shrimp, and tallapia.    His favorite NBA player is Lebron James and his favorite coach is Avery Johnson, currently at Dallas, and his favorite college football team is Michigan and his fav. bball team is Florida.  Turk has participated in CM for the last three years and has been a dominant player within the league.  The title “swing man” is earned because this guy is a complete player that encompasses a few positions– He can bring the ball up the court, he can hit the  3 (very well), he can post up, and he is a versatile defender.  Turk is an intense player and very hardworking on both ends of the court.  The success of his team (currently in first place) can, in part, be attributed to his passion for the game.  About CM, Turk says, “It gives us something to do and helps keep some of the young guys off the streets...we get bible study each week and the whole program is a positive influence on many lives.”    This talented young man is also humble, good hearted, and a leader among men.  We thank you Turk for faithfully being apart of CM and pray God continues to bless you and yours.

eddieWEEK 28 April 30th 2007

Eddie Walker

6’3 Shooting guard

Eddie was born in Saginaw, MI and moved to Flint as a youth.  He attended Holmes middle school and Northern High, but he didn’t start playing ball until the 1oth grade (sounds like M.J.).  As a youth, Eddie developed his skills playing at the parks, but now he is one of the ‘best kept secrets’ among the local hooping community.  His goal is to play professional basketball and is currently working towards making a traveling team.  With Eddie’s skill level and humble nature he is sure to get picked up soon.  Coaches want players who will take it to the competition and give 110% all the time and that is exactly the kind of player Eddie is.  His game is both versatile and aggressive on the offensive and defensive ends of the court  and when all that is combined into a whole game it is quite an entertaining show– and word of advice to the comp...if he even looks like he is about to take off, get out of the way.  Eddie’s favorite food is pizza and at the holidays he eats all the dressing he can find.  His hobbies include drawing and playing the drums (and keyboard) at church.  Eddie has been playing drums since he was 14 (taught by his brothers wife) and has also enjoyed many years of Tae Kwon Do and gymnastics. He displayed his gymnast ability at the slam dunk contest when he attempted to do a front flip and then dunk the ball.  His favorite all time  player is Michael Jordan and current favorites are Kobe and Lebron.  Eddie is a hard worker on and off the court as he work in the construction industry doing roofing, drywalling, and painting. He has played in CM for about 2 years and his team has always been one of the best..  Eddie is one of the leagues top scorers and most consistent players. About CM, Eddie says, “I love the Flint City Ministry and everything Pastor does for all of us...and having been raised in the church I enjoy the bible studies and they help me get through the week.”  Eddie has been a silent but dominant  force in the league since he first came to the league.  Eddie we thank you for your participation and we pray that God will continue to bless you and yours.

He said that he can shoot, but he loves to take it to the hoop.  About CM, Scooter says, “Fun and Games in God’s Hands!”  He also said that he likes that the league is so competitive and yet everyone is like family.  Scooter, we appreciated your participation and leadership in CM and we pray God will continue to bless you and yours.  Best wishes in all your endeavors.

Mike Bray

6’2’’-2 guard

mikeyMike was born and raised in Flint and began playing hoop in the 3rd grade at Summerfield elementary.  He attended Lowell Middle school and Northern High and continued playing ball whenever he got the chance.  Mike also played a year with the Job Corp. traveling team which went throughout the U.S. playing ball.  He is also a member of the ’neighborhood superstars’ whom represent Flint in the 3-on-3 circuits.   His favorite pro team is the Lakers and favorite player is Paul Pierce because “he can do everything”.  Mike’s favorite football team is Florida State and his fav NFL team is the Colts. Mike’s favorite food is chicken, just chicken.  He says he could eat it all the time every day, he loves it.  Mike’s favorite hobbies are drawing and listening to music.  One of his aspirations in life is to be an architect– his dream is to design homes and buildings.  He is in pursuit of this dream as he has changed his major to mechanical engineering.  Mike has been a part of CM since season one when we first opened our doors.  Since then, he has been a faithful participant and volunteer within the program.  Mike assisted with the youth basketball program by  coaching, reffing, and mentoring the youth.  In 2005, he was awarded with the CM MVP (7ft. Trophy) which alone speaks clearly about his character. Mike also has been a major asset for his team each season leading the team in 3-pt. field goals.  He can shoot the 3, we all know that, but he is also a threat off the dribble because he’s got a nice pull-up jumper.  About CM, Mike says, “It’s just fun and I like the message after the game because its about life in general...what Pastor says in the bible study sticks with me more than just bouncing a ball.” We thank you for your participation and pray that God’s hand will continue to guide your life.

WILL BRADSHAW

5’11 Shooting Guard

willWill  was born and raised in Flint and attended several schools throughout his youth.  He also grew up loving the game of basketball.  Will played at Zimmer adult education and he says that he was the only ‘white boy’ to do so.  He said that playing ball was everything to him in his youth and that he loves it so much that he will be playing even when he’s old.  Will’s favorite food is tacos and of course his favorite  pastime is basketball.  His hobby is music– doing music, producing music, developing music, all of it.  His goal is to be a positive artist in the music industry and give the youth higher aspirations through listening to his music. (that would be a great alternative for our youth!)  Will’s favorite all time players are Dominiq Wilkens and Sir Charles– “he’s a beast.”  Fav. Current player is Baron Davis– “he’s a dog” and his Fav. Coach is Jerry Slone.  About his character, he is a very positive person who would rather give than receive.  He is very humbled and thankful for what he has and God has blessed him accordingly.  Will’s goal is to use music and coaching to be a positive force in the lives of at-risk youth. He enjoys coaching because he has the opportunity to mentor the kids along with teaching them basketball skills.  “I would love to coach kids and help them get off the streets”.  As for CM, Will is one of the ORIGINALS. He received the First MVP of the league and has 14 trophies and counting. His CM quote:  “Its so family oriented...there isn’t a better place to play ball in the world.  You walk in the door and you feel so welcomed.” Will played a major role in the youth league coaching and mentoring the youth on and off the court.  He also assisted with the women’s basketball league running the clock and refereeing.  Will, for your participation and volunteering we thank you and pray God will continue to bless you in your future endeavors.

WEEK 38 July 16th 2007

Corey Green

6’ FWD

corey greenCorey was born and raised in Flint and began playing ball in the 5th grade.  He attended Longfellow middle school and later went to Northern for his high school years.  While at Northern he played on the basketball team for his 9th, 10th, and 11th grade seasons.  Corey loves the game of basketball and began playing at City Ministry while still in high school at Doyle Ryder.  He recalled the clock that we use to hang from the backboard and even when CM was running at Sobey elementary school with Jiggy (he’s a CM vet.) Corey has played everywhere he can growing up...city leagues, 3-on-3’s (remember the Mecca) and of course City Ministry.  Over the years, God has blessed Corey, more specifically with his girlfriend of 14 years (15 year anniversary July 4th 2008) and two nieces, Ankhryah & Laeeja,  which he prides himself in caring for.  His favorite food is Lasagna and his hobbies include playing ball and watching movies and he collects exotic animals– alligator, lizards, fish.  Corey’s favorite pro team is the Pistons and his favorite player is K.G.  One of his life goals is to own his own business, preferably involving cars– auto repair, maintenance… Corey has known Pastor Stevens for over 15 years, and still counting, and he also knows and respect the CM program well. This is his first season that he has played in CM here at Great Lakes Baptist Temple but he has already made an impact on his team and in the league.  He is a competitive force on the court offensively and defensively and not many guys want to check him.  He is also the leading scorer on the team which is contending for first place in the Friday Night League. Corey has played in many leagues over the years, but about CM he says, “ It’s the best league I’ve ever played in because it doesn’t change.”  He has been involved in CM over the years and attended sports banquets in the past but he has not experienced a banquet quite like we do them now.  Maybe CM participants from last season can tell him about the trophies. But like Corey said, CM doesn’t change. Some things get bigger and better, but the overall program never changes.  We thank you, Corey, for your participation throughout the years and may God continue to bless you and yours.

Artez loves his sports as well and his favorite pro team is the Pistons and his favorite player is Kobe.  His favorite hobbies include playing chess, playing softball (co-ed league), and dancing.  Tez’s favorite choice of food is chicken with cheesy potatoes and corn.  Three years ago, God blessed Artez with his special lady, Angel,   and their beautiful son, Atrez Jr. 2.5 years old.  His son, A.J., has been a faithful participant in CM, coming to the gym just about every week since he’s been born. And he loves eating the Twizzlers just like the rest of the guys.  Tez has participated in the CM program for about 5 years, coming each week to play ball and have fun.  He was a quiet guy for the first couple years, but over the last year he has been speaking up more and more-asking Pastor Stevens each week, “So...when am I going to get my article?”.  Artez has been a blessing to the program as well as an asset to his team.  He can shoot the 3, but he is an unselfish player who has no problems distributing the ball effectively.  Artez also keeps his teammates focused each game and motivates them when they need to be picked up.  He always comes into the gym smiling and about CM he says, “ This is the ONLY league you get to come to and get the BEST bible studies in the city.” Tez also comes to CM and volunteers at the scorers table when he gets the opportunity and he always has a great attitude.    Artez, we thank you for your participation throughout the years and may God continue to bless you and yours.

WEEK 40 July 30th 2007

big huntStacey “Big” Hunt

6’3’’Center

Stacey was raised here in Flint, but grew up with Pastor Stevens in the City Ministry Program.  Big hunt attended Northern High and started playing ball in CM at Doyle Ryder when he was 16 years old. He played with “Fighting Mike” Scott and A.D. Cochran and they were notorious for giving Pastor Stevens a hard time.  Since his youth, Pastor Stevens has been there for Stacey as a mentor, father figure, and advisor and also helped him get his first job. He accepted Christ into his heart in CM and began serving the Lord at a young age.   Over the years, God has blessed him accordingly with his wife, Darla, and also with a career in the construction industry.  To this day, whenever Big Hunt  has a problem he goes to Pastor Stevens and when the Pastor needs a minute away, he finds himself at Stacey’s house.  Pastor never had a son, but he considers Stacey Hunt to be just that.  Stacey is still a big part of the City Ministry and when his schedule allows it he comes to referee and support the program.  He is also the same man who drove to North Dakota with Pastor Stevens to get the Score Clock that is up in our gym here at Great Lakes Baptist Temple.  Stacey loves the City Ministry and would do anything for it– and there isn’t anything Pastor would not do for Big Hunt.  Pastor loves Stacey very much and would like every person in this program to know that he    wants to do the same for each and every one of you. “Stacey, I love you like a son, and pray for you every day that God will continue to bless you,  guide and direct you, and smooth your path.”

E. was born and raised in Flint and began hoop while attending Longfellow middle school. He later attended Northern high where he continued to play basketball and develop his game and also played in 3-on-3’s and city leagues throughout the area.  Eric must have spent much of his time working on his shooting skills because he currently one of the best if not the best,   3 point shooters in the league.  He’s got a quick release and he can shoot from half-court with accuracy!  Although E. is a great basketball player, he is known and well respected because he is a leader.  His presence on the court helps his team work together and off the court others look to him for guidance.  God has given this man a great gift in being a leader among his peers and for this Eric was given much responsibility which he manages accordingly.  He is a kind and humble man and allowing God to work through him.  He accepted Christ into his heart and was baptized at Metropolitan Baptist Church where he also assists with the sick and shut in who are in need of daily care.  Eric’s goals are to become an electrical engineer and pursue a career in that field of study.  He is also a very dedicated father who loves his family and son, Eric Long Jr., very much.  One of his hobbies must be teaching his son how to play ball because Eric Jr. is developing into a talented athlete while still in his youth.  E. has participated in CM for 4 seasons and has two MVP trophies and an MVP all-star game MVP.   About CM, he says “I like that the family bonds together here...we get the Word, and I like what Pastor is about.  I also like the competitiveness of the league.”  Eric, we thank you for your participation in CM and entertaining us each week.  We pray that God will continue to work in your life and bless you and yours for your service to Him.
