Our History

Over thirty years ago, City Ministry began in New York City as one young Bible scholar was called to reach the people on the inner city streets.  While attending Baptist Bible College in ShrubOak, NY, George Stevens surrendered to his call with an intense desire to win souls for the Lord.  With a strong will and fiery spirit Pastor Stevens  chose to  start his mission in NYC, where millions were living in fearful communities with crime, violence, poverty, and gang wars on every block.  His fire was   fueled by the masses of people who were in search of the truth that can only be found in God our heavenly Father.  The awesome power of the Lord was with Pastor Stevens as he worked the parks for years and developed one of the most successful outreach programs located within the five boroughs. 

On his first trip into the City, Pastor Stevens drove to Manhattan and began shouting out the message of hell fire from the top of his beat up white panel van.  The people on the street just kept walking by.  The next day, he was sitting in his van at 133rd and Broadway eating a split-ham and cheese  sandwich watching hundreds of people in the park break-dancing, playing stick ball, basketball, drinking and selling drugs.  He saw the ball in the back of his van and decided to go challenge the best player there to a one-on-one game of basketball. If he won, the crowd had to sit and listen to a 20 minute Bible preaching on how to get to heaven.  (Picture if you will a red headed white man in a 3-piece suit walking up to this crowd) He quickly drew the attention of the huddled mass and the crowd offered up an All-American from Dewitt-Clinton H.S. who accepted  Pastor’s challenge.  They played, and with God, Pastor won.  Thirty –five people, including Johnny Juan, the leader of the “ball buster gang”, accepted Christ that afternoon.  Every day after that Pastor Stevens drove into NYC armed with a Bible and an orange ball ready to play and then preach.  God used this ministry to reach thousands in NYC, and continued His work in Flint, Michigan.  Praise God, He’s not done yet...
